As of 2017, Art in the Age will no longer produce ROOT, SNAP, SAGE, and RHUBARB at Greenbar Distillery in Los Angeles. Instead, the brand will focus on new small batch spirits from founder Steven Grasse’s Tamworth Distilling. We’re incredibly excited to share all of our new creations with you, including seasonal infusions and local collaborations. There are various amounts of each ROOT, SNAP, RHUBARB and SAGE out there across the country. If you are a fan of these variants, we suggest you snatch them up and buy them when you see them.
TASTING ROOM & HOME BAR SUPPLY
A decade ago, we opened Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction in Old City Philadelphia. Borrowing its name from Walter Benjamin’s canonical 1936 essay, the store began as an artists’ collective, rooted in the traditions of American craftsmanship. Founder Steven Grasse developed a line of spirits in that same tradition, using recipes and ingredients drawn from the history of Pennsylvania, and the Art in the Age brand was born. As the experimental arm of his spirits-focused creative agency, Quaker City Mercantile, Art in the Age has remained at the forefront of innovation in the spirits industry.
How did we get there? Like the Transcendentalists who fled the industrial wasteland in search of spiritual truth, we headed to Tamworth, New Hampshire and began distilling for ourselves. We wrote a book, Colonial Spirits, about what drinking was like over 250 years ago. We partnered with local distillers at New Liberty, to create spirits inspired by the history of our city, Philadelphia: from the early days of revolution, through its industrial heyday, up to its current renaissance.
The Art in the Age Tasting Room and Home Bar Supply is the workshop and testing ground for Quaker City Mercantile, and the only place you can taste the company’s newest innovations. It will soon serve as a designated “satellite location” for New Liberty Distilling, allowing us to sell New Liberty’s products as well as new Art in the Age products bottled there. Alongside this curated lineup of unique local spirits, Art in the Age is a one-stop-shop for the home bartender. The shop stocks bar tools, mixers, bitters, and glassware. We also offer educational workshops, tastings, and home mixology training.

- Why can’t I find ROOT (or SNAP, SAGE, RHUBARB) anymore?
Because we stopped making them. Here’s why: We’re bringing Art in the Age back to its roots as a line of unique, experimental spirits, and back to Philadelphia where it all began. Our name comes from an essay by Walter Benjamin, “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction”, which argues that when something is mass-produced on a huge scale, it no longer has the same “aura” — that special quality that belongs only to the unique, handmade, one-of-a-kind piece of art. After years of producing these original four variants, we wanted to bring Art in the Age back to this original ethos. Our new distillery in Tamworth, NH makes it possible.
- What will happen to ROOT, SNAP, SAGE, and RHUBARB?
- Going forward, where will Art in the Age spirits be made?
Art in the Age spirits are made from scratch at Tamworth Distilling, in Tamworth, New Hampshire, and bottled at New Liberty Distillery in Philadelphia.
- Where will new products be available?
Art in the Age products will be available exclusively at the Art in the Age tasting room in Philadelphia, and at Tamworth Distilling & Mercantile. They will share shelves with select Tamworth Distilling spirits as well as products from our local partner, New Liberty Distillery.
In addition, all of above products can be shipped within the state of Pennsylvania.
- What is the connection to New Liberty Distillery?
Art in the Age serves as a satellite location for New Liberty Distillery. This means you can taste and buy their spirits at both the Art in the Age shop and at New Liberty’s retail space.
